As soon as I discovered the Buzludzha monument, I’ve always wanted to tell a story about it.
This building, located on top of a peak in the Central Balkan mountains in Bulgaria, used to be the head quarters of the Communist Party and is now slowly decaying since the collapse of the USSR in 1991.
I had the opportunity to visit the building twice and I enjoyed the experience so much that I decided to produce a short film about it. I wanted to try and convey the feelings I had when getting up there and slowly getting closer.
All the assets are modelled and textured by myself and I also composed the music.
Nuke compositing breakdowns.
Screen captures from Speedtree.
Vegetation assets turntables.
I used Blender Grease Pencil to create a 2d animation of a character walking up the mountain to the building.
I first recorded myself in the various situations, then applied the video to a 2d card in blender and finally draw on top of the card. I went for a 12fps frame rate which is enough to read the animation and saved me some time in the process, drawing 1 frame out of 2.
I used Terragen to create all my animated cloudy skies, rendered them separately in the software and composited them in Nuke.
Finally, I composed the music and recorded it using FL Studio.
